Hawke’s Bay is a very special place for making wine. Its range of slopes, plains and climatic differences, coupled with low humidity and ample ultra-violet light, give winemakers a comprehensive toolkit to showcase their skills. Soils are young and derived from the gravels, silt and sands left behind as the three main rivers of Hawke’s Bay changed course over thousands of years.
Te Mata Estate was established here in 1896, specialising in high-quality wines of classical style. Every step in the production of our wines is undertaken by us, from grape growing and pruning through to winemaking and bottling.
In 2012, Te Mata Estate launched Estate Vineyards - a collection of five varietally-designated wines; Merlot/Cabernets, Syrah, Gamay Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Estate Vineyard wines are produced exclusively from Te Mata Estate’s own vineyards and represent the best qualities of their variety, vintage, and Hawke's Bay origin.
Today, Te Mata Estate is recognized as one of New Zealand’s most prestigious wine producers, making nearly 40,000 cases a year of premium wine and exporting to over 42 countries.
Deep magenta with a crimson edge, this is signature Awatea - a modern Hawke’s Bay cabernet with deep, pure fruit and bright, floral aromatics. Roses, violets, wild blackberry and dark plum, intertwined with notes of aniseed and thyme. Then, on the palate, immediate bright red and black fruits, blackcurrants, spice, raspberry syrup and a layered, almost saline, tannin structure with a refreshingly, fine, dry finish. Awatea ’16, as ever, is stylish Te Mata cabernet that totally over-delivers.
Deep crimson, Bullnose ’16 weaves star anise, violets, black cherry and allspice across a core of ripe berry fruit and luxurious, velvet tannins. From Te Mata Estate’s 120th vintage, this is an enchanting, signature Bullnose. Expressive, darkly aromatic, and replete with fresh raspberry, boysenberry, and espresso, all leading to a finely textured finish.
Bullnose ’16 is closed with a natural cork, allowing continued evolution in bottle for eight years from harvest.
Deep magenta, Estate Vineyards Cabernets/Merlot ’17 overflows with fresh red berries, dark cherries, blueberry and ripe Hawke’s Bay plums. Savoury bay leaf, and fine toast and spice notes from the oak, give our 2017 release great presence, varietal personality and complexity on the palate. Appealing, approachable – and just a touch aristocratic – Estate Vineyards Cabernets/Merlot ’17 continues to over-deliver in flavour, intricacy and finesse.
Estate Vineyards Merlot/Cabernets ’17 will continue to evolve in bottle for three to six years from harvest.
Palest lemon green, Cape Crest Sauvignon Blanc ’17 is all about texture, refreshment and refinement. Grapefruit and lime juice on the nose, with notes of white flowers, quince and cardamom, the wine expands into fennel, currants, elderflower, pears, honey and sweet nectarine on the palate. Ripe sub-tropical fruit is balanced by a long, dry finish with a crisp edge and floral, delicate lift.
Cape Crest ’17 is closed with a 'Diam' cork, which eliminates any possibility of cork taint, allowing continued evolution in bottle for five years from harvest.
Perfume of ripe golden peach, nectarine, citrus blossom. Biscuit and fresh cream notes adding immaculate texture and length. Crystal lemon in colour, the fresh elegance of Estate Vineyards Chardonnay ’16 is a magical match to rich seafood like grilled scallops. Fine and precise – this is a thoroughly modern chardonnay of immense enjoyability.
Estate Vineyards Chardonnay ’16 will continue to evolve in bottle for two to four years from harvest.
Elston Chardonnay ’17 is a fine, pale gold with notes of beeswax, white flowers, ripe peaches and flinty, wet, stone that flow through onto the palate. Roast almonds, hazelnuts, clover honey and warm brioche, along with this wine’s signature tight acidity, give the Elston Chardonnay ’17 incredible length, detail and finesse.
Elston ’17 is closed with a 'Diam' cork, which eliminates any possibility of cork taint, allowing continued evolution in bottle for five years from harvest.
Deep, brilliant crimson with a cherry-red edge, Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir ’18 sparkles with lifted candy-apple, strawberry and star anise on the nose. Soft and luscious, the palate overflows with crushed red summer fruit, wild raspberry and cherry. Hints of rosewater and aniseed culminate in this wine’s sumptuous finish. Refreshing in its appeal, beguiling in its detail, Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir ’18 is New Zealand Gamay Noir par excellence – the result of an incredible vintage, this is the best we have made.
Estate Vineyards Gamay Noir ’18 can be enjoyed immediately upon release and can be served at room temperature or, during summer, lightly chilled. It will continue to develop in bottle for two years from harvest.
